A Letter from the Chairman, Steven Ashcroft
October 2004

COMMUNITY CENTRE TO REMAIN IN ST GEORGE’S ROAD FOR FORESEEABLE FUTURE
Stephen Ashcroft seeks to dispel current rumours.
As chairman of the Wimbledon Community Association I wish to clarify our position regarding the proposed Auditorium and Performance Space in the Broadway following inaccuracies in recent reporting in the local press.
Our trustees have in the past been concerned that the Broadway site is not large enough to accommodate our community centre and the other elements proposed for it.
Meetings with LBM’s consultants and their subsequent report have done much to reassure us. Also, as we exist to serve principally those who live in the immediate Wimbledon area – though our user group is much more dispersed than this – the idea of relocating to the Broadway is less significant for us than it would be for other Associations in the borough.
We are, however, a long way from agreeing to a move or to the disposal of our St George’s Road community centre. The Council acknowledges our independence here and at this stage we have a duty to retain our right to withdraw from the scheme if unforeseen difficulties arise.
Reporting, wrongly, that a Council cabinet had agreed in theory to the disposal of our site (Wimbledon Guardian 16th September) does enormous damage to our operation here. Users are discouraged and casual funding sources dry up. (The latter is particularly damaging to us as we a re completely self-funding.)
Nevertheless, we wholly support the Council’s proposed mixed use scheme which we believe offers an excellent replacement for the old Civic Hall in new, spacious, high quality, purpose-built premises.

Stephen Ashcroft
Chairman
Wimbledon Community Association.
